Giani Zail Singh College of Engineering and Technology

The Giani Zail Singh College Of Engineering and Technology (GZSCET) is a college in Bathinda. It is the first institute in Punjab, India, established with the full funding of state government. It was founded in 1989 when the Governor of Punjab Sh.S.S.Ray laid the foundation stone on October 23rd. The college president is Gagan Taneja (2K5 batch).

History

Initially set up as a Government Engineering College, it was converted to an autonomous institute in 1992 and a Board of Governors was constituted to manage the affairs of the College. The Chairman of the Board of Governors is the Chief Executive for technical education in the state, other members include industrialists, academicians, and senior representatives of the state government. The college is affiliated with the Punjab Technical University in Jalandhar.

The college is affiliated to Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, and follows the semester system of education. Each academic year is divided into two semesters - July/August to December and January to June/July. University examinations are held at the end of each semester.

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1989. Industrial training is provided at three levels in the degree course training i.e. two training at the end of first and second year for the duration of six weeks each, and the third one at the end of third year for the duration of one complete semester of six months in industry.

In the final year the students select a project to verify their skills and knowledge.

Electronics and Communications Engineering

The department offers a four year B.Tech program in Electronics and Communication Engineering. The department has expertise in the area of Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic Systems, Genetic Algorithms, Fault tolerant Interconnection Networks, Parallel and Distributed Computing and Multiprocessor Scheduling. It has laboratories of Digital Electronics and Microprocessors, Communication Engineering, Instrumentation and Power Electronics, Analog Electronics Devices and Circuits, and Neural Networks. The faculty is actively involved in Research and Development.

Electrical Engineering

The Department offers a B.Tech. programme in Electrical Engineering. Equipments in the laboratories of the department includes Microprocessor and Control Systems training kits, synchronous/induction motors and generators, DC machines and transformers, relay testing/demonstration sets and star delta tests. One of the faculty members of the department has developed a Device called Night Time High Way System (NTHS), which has been patented with the government of India. He is also developing a Direct Current Transformer (DCT) for power system utilities. The department does research work.

Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering offers undergraduate programmes in the area of Concrete Technology and Structural Engineering, Environmental, Geo-technical, Transportation, and Hydraulics. The labs undertake sponsored research projects and consultancy assignments.

Through departmental elective subjects the students can specialize in areas of Civil Engineering. Major lab equipment is Universal Testing Machine (UTM) Soil Penetration Test apparatus, Compression Testing Machine, Loading Frame, Spectrophotometer, Weather Station and BOD Incubator. The Department earns nearly Rupees 20 lacs per annum through consultancy services in Civil Engineering.

Textile Engineering

The Textile Engineering Course was introduced in 1995. There is interaction with nearby industries for teaching the students on the shop floor.

Equipment includes Universal Tensile Tester, Projection Microscope, Stiffness Tester, Plain Circular Knitting Machine, Rib Circular Knitting Machine, Warping Machine, and Power loom. The Department offers specialized courses i.e. Advance Theory of Textile Structure, Clothing crence and Garment Technology, Knitting Technology, Non-Conventional yarn Manufacture, Non-woven Technology and Management of Textile manufacture.

The Department has a local academy of Cisco to run the Cisco Network Academy program for the students of this college. The successful students are awarded the CNAP Certificate from Cisco.

Computer Science and Engineering

The department offers an undergraduate B.Tech programme in Computer Science and Engineering. The program offers instruction in fundamental principles, design and application of computer systems, computer technologies and S/W development. The Department has 24 hour internet through VSAT.

Architectural Engineering

The department offers five year B.Arch programme, spread over ten semesters to prepare the students for professional practice in the field of architecture. The department is equipped with drawing studios, building material museum, audio visual lab model making workshop and resource centre.

On education tours students are taken to places of architectural interest all over the country. The department offers elective subjects i.e. Landscape Design, Rural Architecture, Interior Design, and Town Planning.

The department has:

Applied Science

Covers Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Communication Skills, Management and Material Science. The department is involved in research and development and contributes to international journals. The department has labs for Material Science and Applied Chemistry which are developed under the MODROBS scheme of the government of India.

All the above courses are of four years duration (eight semesters) except Architectural Engineering which is of five years duration (ten semesters).
